What is worship leaders guild (WLG)?

According to britannica.com, a guild is “an association of craftsmen or artisans formed to maintain craft standards, provide mutual aid and protection, and/or pursue a common goal.”

WLG began in 2015 to train young musicians in an instrument and the craft of playing music for worship. It has evolved over the years to a 10 week program that teaches the basics of guitar, bass, keyboard/piano, drums, voice or audio engineering in group settings. By the end of the semester each student will have the opportunity to play in a group with other students and experience the thrill of playing (singing, mixing) in a band and leading others in worship.

OUR APPROACH…

Our goal is to help kids discover the joy of playing music, especially in the context of a faith community. So our instruction is a little different than traditional lessons (and compliments traditional lessons well):

  • Song-Based Approach. Playing a real song is fun and fuels a desire to continue learning. So students learn their instrument by playing songs they may have heard on the radio or sung in church.

  • Chord Charts First. Most contemporary worship teams play using chord charts rather than traditional sheet music. Reading music and learning theory is important, but we start with chord charts first, and zoom in on theory as we go.

  • Community. Rather than learning one on one with an instructor, our lessons take place in encouraging small groups with an experienced coach. By the end of the semester, you’ll be playing in a band with other students.

  • Scripture Every Week. Every week we reflect on scripture and learn what the bible says about music and worship.
